Max's first medical case aboard the Odyssey was a man (Tom McGowan), who ate too much shrimp at the seafood buffet, and his wife (Rachel Dratch) started to worry after he developed a rash. He was diagnosed with iodine poisoning by nurse Avery Morgan (Phillipa Soo), before later returning with a collarbone that needed to be reinserted.

The next situation was a little more delicate when a couple engaged in an amorous activity that resulted in a broken penis. Max was able to treat the penile fracture as he had previously suffered from the same disease. The advantage? The disease occurs in “larger and stronger limbs,” so Dr. Max was still ahead with this revelation.

Later in the episode, Max, Avery and nurse Tristan Silva (Sean Teale) attended to a passenger who had fallen overboard. The rescue was successful and somehow everyone ended the cruise with a smile on their face.

Once Max joins the Odyssey, everyone is left wondering why he chose this job when he could have prestigious opportunities on land. The answer? It turned out that Max had a life-changing experience that made him want to better balance work and play.

Doctor Odyssey reveals that Max was actually the first patient in the US to contract COVID-19 in 2020, which almost brought him to death's door. With the help of his colleagues at the hospital he was able to hold on, but he has since found a new life.

“Speaking of that particular character beat, it's a specific reason why he does what he does. But I think it's also, in Ryan's eyes, a metaphor for where we've all been,” Jackson explained TheWrap on Thursday about the narrative shift. “No one has been spared from COVID, and whether you were in a pod with other people, whether you were isolated, whether you got it early, whether you got it late, or God forbid you lost someone – we all have went through this radical crisis, simply to use therapy to summarize the traumatic event together. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t re-evaluated their life at some point during this time.”

The actor called the reveal a “beautiful starting point” for the show.

“I just feel like we were all there. Not all of us chose to work on a cruise ship, but we all thought about it: “Maybe I just need to start over,” or “Maybe I just quietly got by but didn’t really live my life ,” he continued. “Everyone has been in the place that Max is in and that’s what sparks the show. That’s the mission here: Let’s all exhale together, turn the page, and commit to life.”
