North Carolina Governor Mark Robinson hospitalized after burns 'incident': reports

North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson was hospitalized and treated for burns Friday following an “incident” during the campaign trail in Mount Airy, a campaign spokesman told multiple media outlets.

According to The Washington Post's Amy Gardner, the controversial Republican gubernatorial candidate suffered burns to his hand after leaning against a truck at the event. The campaign described him as being in “good spirits” despite the hospital stay.

Robinson suffered second-degree burns and is expected to return to the campaign trail Saturday, NewsNation campaign reporter Libbey Dean noted

According to his Friday schedule obtained by CNN, he was scheduled to stop by the Mayberry Truck Show and Parade in Mount Airy.

The campaign described him as being in “good spirits” despite the hospital stay.

NewsNation was first to report the hospitalization.

Robinson's hospitalization comes just over a week after a CNN report linked him to disturbing comments on a porn site, including one in which he called himself a “black Nazi” and another in which he self-described as a “pervert” who enjoys pornography of transgender people.

The North Carolina Republican called the reports “lies” while suggesting the comments “may have happened.”

Several members of his campaign staff have resigned following reports of the scandal, and former President Donald Trump, who has endorsed Robinson and called him “Martin Luther King on steroids,” told reporters this week that he was “not aware of the situation” when he said was asked if he would withdraw his support.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
