Sterling HS student Pablo Castaneda is accused of reaching for the deputy's gun after a hearing about an alleged stabbing, prosecutors say

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The Sterling High School student is accused of stabbing a classmatewho triggered a two-hour lockdown last week could now face additional charges for attempting to reach for a deputy's gun, prosecutors told ABC13 on Friday.

According to the Harris County District Attorney's Office, officers had to restrain 17-year-old Pablo Castaneda, whom authorities had charged with aggravated assault as an adult in connection with the alleged stabbing, after he reached for a weapon.

Prosecutors said this happened as officers were walking Castaneda from the 351st District Court to a holding area Friday morning. Castaneda's alleged shooting attempt led to an altercation with officers.

Records show a judge had just lowered Castaneda's bail from $100,000 to $50,000 before the riot.

The Houston Independent School District Police Department said the first stabbing occurred on Sept. 18 and the victim, who was involved in a fight with the suspect, survived his injuries.

The mother of a Sterling student shared video of the stabbing with ABC13 that shows her son standing just feet away from the attack.

“My baby is traumatized,” she told Eyewitness News at the time.

The chaos on campus was one of several school incidents that authorities said occurred within a week in the greater Houston area.

Earlier this week, HISD said recent threats to the campus led to this Seven students were arrested. Additionally, the FBI's Houston field office said it has logged more than 30 reports of threats since the start of the school year.

Eyewitness News also obtained data from the District Attorney's Office showing that between August 2023 and today, 127 criminal charges have been filed against minors related to making threats or illegally carrying weapons on campus. 85 of these were weapons.
