IND vs. BDESH 2024/25, IND vs. BAN 2nd test match report, September 27th – October 1st, 2024

Bangladesh 107 for 3 (Mominul 40*, Shanto 31, Akash Deep 2-34) vs India

A combination of poor light and heavy rain meant only 35 overs were possible on the opening day of the second Test between India and Bangladesh in Kanpur, in which Bangladesh scored 107 for 3.

The toss itself was delayed by an hour because the outfield was wet due to overnight rain. When the toss finally came, the coin fell in India's favor. Under cloudy skies, Rohit Sharma did not hesitate to bowl first – the first time India had done so in a home Test since 2015.

Rohit expected his three seamers – India fielded an unchanged XI – to take advantage of the conditions. He said the pitch was a bit soft and had a bit more grass than the usual Kanpur surface. Bangladesh interpreted the conditions completely differently. Not only did they want to bat first, but they also picked three spinners.

Jasprit Bumrah made the ball move in both directions and initially bowled three maidens but failed to take a wicket. Mohammed Siraj also had no success as Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan survived the opening phase. In fact, Zakir was unable to open his account despite having 20 balls in that period.

Things changed when Akash Deep was introduced in the ninth over. On his third ball, Zakir came towards him and pushed him towards the gully where Yashasvi Jaiswal went to his right and buried him with both hands. The TV referee was questioned about the fairness of the catch. He just had a good angle, but it was enough to conclude that the ball landed straight into Jaiswal's hands.

A few overs later, Akash Deep struck again. As he continued around the wicket, he managed to beat Shadman's inside edge and hit him on the pad. The on-field umpire denied the big LBW appeal – it looked like the ball had hit leg stump at best. India decided to review and to everyone's surprise, the projection showed the ball hitting a good bit of leg stump.

Shanto showed a positive attitude and caught a few wobbly boundaries on the outside half of the bat. Mominul also started hesitantly but gained confidence as the innings progressed. He picked up fours each from Akash Deep and Siraj over the ramp before driving Bumrah through the roof.

As the last session before lunch was underway, it began to drizzle, delaying the second session by 15 minutes. When play resumed, it didn't take R Ashwin long to make an arm-around-the-wicket attempt and beat Shanto's inside edge to trap him lbw for 31. This ended the 51-run stand for the third wicket.

After that, Mominul and Mushfiqur Rahim experienced some nervous moments. Akash Deep caught Mushfiqur's outside edge but through the gap between third slip and the gully it went for four. Three overs later, Mominul attempted a full toss from Bumrah, only to have him pushed over the fence for another boundary.

This was also the last pass before it became too dark to continue. It soon began to rain and the referees had to abandon the game just before 3 p.m. local time.
