Mobile police arrest 26 people in an undercover operation for illegal drug trafficking

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) – The Mobile Police Department conducted a three-month investigation focused on the sale of illegal drugs on the south side of the city.

According to an MPD release, the area included the Baltimore Street and Down the Bay areas.

News 5's Kathryn Bruch accompanied the mobile police on the operation and spoke with MPD Captain Jonathan Lee.

“Drug buying is found in south Mobile, especially Down the Bay,” Lee said. “The first location we are attacking is not technically in this area, but this target has drug sales in this area and lives elsewhere.”

MPD said it conducted the operation based on complaints and information from residents.

The police Narcotics and Vice Unit executed nine search warrants with the assistance of SWAT, Canine Detail, Gang Intelligence and the Tactical Intelligence Detail.

“We locate different people in different places,” Lee said. “And so we need a variety of things. We conducted direct traffic enforcement in certain drug-heavy areas and resulted in a significant number of drug arrests there.”

The operation seized 580 grams of marijuana, 12 grams of cocaine, 12 grams of synthetic marijuana, 13 grams of methamphetamine, $32,366 in U.S. dollars and seven firearms. There are still five outstanding targets.

“We get these leads; We are going after them,” said Mobile Police Chief William Jackson. “Leads us to a day like today where we're out here conducting multiple searches across the city trying to curb the drug market.”
