Anthony Gordon is close to signing a new long-term contract with Newcastle United

Newcastle United are close to securing the future of winger Anthony Gordon by signing the 23-year-old to a new long-term contract.

The athlete announced in August that Newcastle was preparing to open talks.

Although a full agreement has not yet been reached, all parties are confident that the deal will be signed with the agreed general terms and conditions.

Having developed his game significantly over the last 18 months, the new contract better reflects his true value and will make him one of Newcastle's highest earners.

The news comes after a complicated summer for Gordon, as he was part of England's squad at the European Championships but only played a few minutes.

Proactive and ruthlessly direct: Gordon is exactly what England need

At the same time, Newcastle opened talks with Liverpool about a possible deal as a last resort for Gordon should they fail to resolve their own issues in complying with the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules.

Although they solved this problem by selling Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion respectively, Gordon would have been open to the prospect of a move to the club he grew up with as a child.

Gordon's new contract then became a priority – for the club there was a desire to both retain their key attacking talent and reaffirm their commitment to the player. Signing him to a long-term contract also secures Gordon's value should a sale occur in future windows.

Inside the mind of Newcastle's Anthony Gordon: treadmill mentality, books and boxing

Head coach Eddie Howe addressed the ongoing negotiations on Friday morning ahead of Newcastle's game against Manchester City.

“We love Anthony, we would be happy if he trusts us with his future and continues his excellent start to his career here,” he said. “He has been great for us and we need to help him get back to his best level. If that means he signs a new contract and is happy and content, then I’m all for it.”

After moving from Everton to Newcastle in January 2023, Gordon won the Golden Ball at the European Under-21 Championship later that year and has since made his senior England debut. He was named Newcastle's 2023/24 Player of the Season after scoring 12 goals and 11 assists in all competitions.

This season, Gordon has scored once in six games for Newcastle.
