Woman charged with murder after Salem's first fatal shooting of 2024

A woman was arrested early Saturday in Salem after a domestic disturbance Friday night that led to a fatal shooting.

Shortly after 9 p.m. on September 27, Salem 911 received a call about a domestic dispute on Hale Avenue. When officers arrived, they found a lifeless man who had been shot.

The victim, 44-year-old Joshua Dickson, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers took 44-year-old Wilma Jean Jones of Roanoke County into custody at the home.

Jones is charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. She is being held without bond.

Salem police said this was the first fatal shooting in the city this calendar year. It is still being investigated.
