Rockford man charged with murder after shooting near MaxMart

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – A 51-year-old man is facing charges after a shooting on Kilburn Avenue left one man dead and one injured.

Murphy Doss, of Rockford, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

Just after 10 p.m. on Sept. 27, Rockford police rushed to the MaxMart on Kilburn Ave. 922 for reports of two gunshot victims.

Officers found a 30-year-old man and a 34-year-old man with apparent gunshot wounds. Both were taken to local hospitals, where the 30-year-old died from his injuries.

Police said witnesses told them there was a verbal altercation within a group of people and that a Doss shot at the victims and then drove away.

Illinois State Police said they located the vehicle at Belvidere Oasis and found a handgun and ammunition inside the vehicle. They identified Doss as the only driver. He was taken to the county jail.
