One person has died in a three-vehicle crash in St. Pete

The accident reportedly occurred after the driver of a Toyota Camry fled a traffic stop on Highway 19, FHP troopers said.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – One person was killed in a crash involving a car, a pickup truck and a box truck on 34th Street North in St. Petersburg, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The accident reportedly occurred around 3 a.m. Saturday after the driver of a Toyota Camry fled a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 19. The driver, who had three passengers in his car, continued south to 34th Street North. The traffic stop was initially carried out because a police officer saw the car driving over a median.

After avoiding an FHP trooper's PIT maneuver, the driver eventually continued south before nearly hitting a tractor-trailer turning onto 34th Street North.

According to police, the driver of the Camry allegedly swerved into the northbound lane to avoid the tractor-trailer before colliding with a box truck and a pickup truck, both of which were stopped at a light.

After the crash, one of the passengers in the Camry suffered serious injuries before dying at the hospital, FHP said. All other drivers and passengers involved suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to the hospital, except for two men in the pickup truck.

According to the FHP, all four people in the Camry were between 18 and 20 years old. No charges have been filed yet as police are currently trying to determine which of them was driving.

FHP says the crash remains under investigation.
