Arab filmmakers are focusing on young audiences, complaining of “unfair competition” with US films and needing to westernize stories to reach hyper-connected teenagers

When trying to break into an emerging film industry, many filmmakers rely on tried-and-tested formats. Family dramas, romantic comedies, action thrillers. But in the Arab region, where countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates are still taking the first steps toward building robust film industries, filmmakers are tapping into a well-connected, media-oriented young audience with their films.

Ahead of the 11th edition of Sharjah Intl. At the Children's and Youth Film Festival, taking place in the UAE from October 6-12, three filmmakers spoke to Variety about the importance of specialized festivals in the region and the challenges that still lie ahead when it comes to making films for Children and young people make audiences in an increasingly westernized Arab world.
