“Angry” Enzo Maresca could bring the new summer signing into the team after an incident during the win

Poor Robert Sanchez. He had only just raised his head above the parapet this week, claiming he was in the “best shape of his career”… and we could all predict what was coming next.

The Spanish goalkeeper sprinted madly away from his line trying to grab a loose ball, but he ended up looking foolish as Georginio Rutter headed the ball just in time into the net, which Sanchez had just released.

That mistake seemed to spook him – as we saw last season, he often follows one mistake after another – and his play on the ball was terrible afterwards. The start of the second half brought no relief and he began that phase with two sloppy attempts that left Enzo Maresca screaming.

Sanchez did make some good saves later in the game, but the damage was done, the downward spiral of confidence had begun. Maresca will certainly be thinking more than ever about signing Filip Jorgensen in the summer and his potential to be a first team option one day.

Difficult circumstances for the goalkeeper to earn his place

Jorgensen hasn't looked particularly impressive in his games either, so it won't be easy for him to force his way into a team that does well and wins, even if that sometimes happens in spite of Sanchez rather than because of him.

Jorgensen's other problem is that the games he gets – in the domestic cups and the Conference League – are generally against teams that are deep and hardly test him, making it very difficult to defend impress. However, he will get a lot of ball and can try to show the calm and security that Sanchez lacked today.

We still don't think it will happen anytime soon, but the dossier on Sanchez's shortcomings is only growing.
