2 students overdose on mushrooms at a Colorado Springs school | Crime and Justice

Two Colorado Springs middle school students were hospitalized and a man was arrested after he overdosed on psilocybin mushrooms at school Tuesday morning, police said.

Around 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, a school resource officer at Fox Meadow Middle School in Harrison District 2 reported that two students had overdosed. Both were taken to Children's Hospital in Colorado Springs.

According to police, two students along with two other teenagers purchased the mushrooms from an adult drug dealer on Monday evening.

The four, ages 12 to 16, contacted the dealer through the app Telegram and purchased the drugs in the parking lot of King Soopers at 815 Cheyenne Meadows Road.

Investigators worked with the teens' parents to recover the remaining mushrooms as evidence and contact the dealer using one of their cell phones.

Investigators posed as one of the teens, arranged another meeting with the dealer and then arrested Damien Solano, who had two ounces of mushrooms on him at the time, police said.

Solano, 21, is charged with multiple counts, including four counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, one count of attempted sale and four counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Solano's first court arraignment was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

According to Christine O'Brien, a D-2 spokeswoman, the two are The students were treated and released to their families.

“We appreciate the diligence of our education staff, students and families who immediately report concerns like this,” she wrote in an email to The Gazette.
