'This definitely stings': Hugh Freeze speaks after Sooners stun Auburn 27-21

Uh, it's exactly like I told the team there and I couldn't be more proud of their performance and, um, their preparation and the way they worked and I thought they played harder , um, and deserves to win the game. And I have to find a damn way to help them win these games and it's, uh, it's not because of them and their performance today, but, uh, our defense played a hell of a game and lost two explosive games . But other than that, I thought they were remarkable and, um, offensively we had a damn good plan. The coaches did a damn good job with a great plan. Um, I thought we ran the ball effectively with some good passes. Um, unfortunately, um, not, um, just didn't execute well enough and obviously gave them the points for the turnover. And, um, I shouldn't have put him in that position and given him, um, that option. So it's, uh, it's definitely a thing that hurts and I have to help our team get over the edge when you have such a damn chance of winning a game like that. I'm proud of these little kids who thought they, uh, played really well and, uh, slowly grew up. But, um, my goodness, this, this is definitely burning. You can just walk us through the decision. Jarque has the big run from the 11 at the 33 and the first few plays and then sets up for a 50-yard field goal of sorts. Can you explain that to us through this property? Yes, I need to make sure he understands the situation better. And, um, and we should have, uh, made runs there, you know, those were, uh, uh, I just have to make it clear to him, uh, what we're trying to do at that moment in the game. Uh, coach, back to the first quarter, uh, you had the ball down, you brought Sam Jackson in for a couple damn plays. Is this something you've been working on in practice or, uh, can you walk us through the play calling in there? Um, yeah, we obviously worked on it for several weeks and just didn't have a damn chance of getting it out, and actually the first one should have scored in my opinion. Um, we, we didn't block it properly. Uh, the look they gave us wasn't much different than what we'd been practicing. But, uh, yeah, that's something that we've been working on to try to get an athletic guy to work the ball in his hands looking back at, uh, that big fourth down stop that you guys scored and then you just run one minute and 30 seconds off the clock and give them the ball back. Talk about it and maybe, you know, in hindsight, what you would have wanted to have done differently there, uh, play football and, uh, milk the clock and take as much time as possible to get two points and, you know You, obviously it's not, this possession definitely stands out. And, um, you know, we should have had 10 more points in the first half if we could have done that too. And it's, uh, these are the things that have possession and, um, and the ones that don't get points, or, or things that I need to do better to make sure that our kids get points These situations and these are important in games like this in this league. And then when you're up by two points, protecting the football and staying on the clock is the number one priority, and we didn't handle that very well. Obviously I have, I have a *** coach at butter coach, despite the result, the out offense outscored Oklahoma by almost 200 yards today. What positives you can take from last week's offense and this week's offense is kind of a heck of a story, you know, we outscored Arkansas by a fair bit last week and today too and, um, but aren't, uh, not winning football games . So, um, we're going to have to do something different to win these games if we're able to get the yards we need. We don't produce the points that should come with it to help. The defense plays really, really hard and pretty well. At the moment the coach is in charge of the defense, we are fourth in charge of the offensive line. What can you perhaps say to the guys who are moving forward to win the fight in the trenches? Yes, it will be hard to win against Oklahoma when they know you're throwing. However, these guys are among the best in the country in pass rush and they have proven it time and time again. These are, uh, not good situations you want to be in. Trainer. Uh, turnovers have been a problem all season, but you know, you control the ball for 23 quarters. Do you ever get the feeling from the players that they feel like they have to be perfect, given how things have turned out so far? Well, the margin of error definitely feels very, very low. You know, you feel the weight of every play call, you feel the weight of the light and I'm sure they feel the weight of the, uh, execution of it, especially when I thought they were playing pretty freely, and we have two points advantage, and of course when it gets pretty close, you all feel, I mean, I think all of us, the coaches and the players, you feel that man, we have to make the perfect call right here. The perfect defender has to run the perfect route and everyone has to be perfect at it, which is a hell of a task if you're playing really good defense. Um, the best thing to do is protect the two-point lead and not put yourself in that position. And that's exactly what we failed to do. Coach, was this damn game coming? Given their situation at quarterback, you felt like you could win a damn game like this with defense, special teams and just playing the ball. Um, I felt like we could win the game. You know, I, I, you know, I thought we were going to be even and, and we were definitely pretty even in the first half, um, you know, we took our shots and threw a few passes and, and , Uh, running football. Um, I definitely thought we had to be even there, but no, I honestly really felt like we were going to win this football game all week. I kind of felt it and felt it this morning too. Okay, coach, a long time ago, after the loss to Tennessee, *** quote, *** man has spoken, there will be many days when you put your heart and soul on the line and come up empty handed up and damn what you can do about it, but go back and put it on the line over and over again. And that's what coach Patrick Fain Die, is that the kind of message you're going to pass on to your team? That's what I told him, man, I couldn't be prouder of the way they represented Auburn today with their heart and their fight. And you know me not helping them find a damn way to win this game sucks and hurts and because they deserve to celebrate now uh Peyton obviously had pick six but also 338 Yards, four touchdowns. I mean, what do you say or say to him after such a damn performance to keep his confidence and spirits high now? Just tell him I love him and then we'll get back to work trying to correct him and get him into better situations where we can finish the damn game like that. Yes.
