Tim Walz is accused of making a mistake in campaign advertising that exposed the VP hopeful as a fake as staffers revealed the truth behind his self-made persona

Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz is being accused of being “a fake” after a new campaign post shows him working under the hood of his car with inexplicably clean hands.

In a nearly three-minute video, the 60-year-old Minnesota governor can be seen working on his light blue 1979 International Harvester Scout.

But while Walz tries to come across as a likeable and down-to-earth member of the middle class, that impression is dashed when viewers see Walz's flawless hands even as he tinkers with various contraptions in the vehicle's dirty engine.

The clip is part of a carefully choreographed video for the Harris/Walz campaign in which they try to portray the former six-term congressman and two-term governor as someone who enjoys the outdoors and is good with tools.

Campaign strategists are able to discern the foundation of the Democratic campaign through the “honest” effort of carefully orchestrated campaign videos.

“Part of being a good politician is having a good punch,” Republican communications strategist Brendan Buck, who was an adviser to GOP speakers John Boehner and Paul Ryan, told The Atlantic.

“Walz always seemed like a loudmouth to me, he was one of those guys on the Hill who maybe tried a little too hard,” Buck said.

“While it “That doesn’t make Walz a bad person or particularly unique among politicians, nor does it give him any special status as the authentic one,” he added.

Another political commentator points out that Walz also benefits from the fact that many people no longer care about the details as voters embrace Walz's role as high school football coach and teller of dad jokes.

Blois Olson, a longtime political commentator, says he believes Walz has proven himself to be a talented political artist, but his pretending to be uneducated and uncultured is merely an act.

“Oh, he totally sucks,” Olson said of Walz. “And he’s really good at being full of shit, too,” Olson said in a backhanded compliment.

Walz will have a chance to introduce himself to millions more potential voters when he and Sen. JD Vance of Ohio meet for their first and only scheduled vice presidential debate on Tuesday.

Their meeting comes five weeks before Election Day, with the two traveling across the country to introduce themselves to the electorate, paying particular attention to the few battleground states that will determine the winner.

Since being selected by Harris as her nominee, Walz has largely stayed away from the national media, although she was a vocal presence earlier this summer.

Harris, too, has been shielded and is on track to grant the fewest interviews ever to a major party's presidential nominee.

Since President Biden ended his re-election bid on July 21, his 59-year-old vice president has held just seven meetings, leaving both her allies and her critics hungry for more.

In contrast, Vance has been consistently present in the media, although he often appears on Republican-friendly networks such as Fox News.
