Man who attempted to defraud older adult among thousands arrested in Marin

A man who allegedly tried to defraud a victim out of thousands of dollars was arrested in Marin County, officials said.

The suspect told the victim that his grandson was in custody at the Alameda County Courthouse and demanded he pay $9,000 bail for his release, according to the Marin County Sheriff's Office. The victim said he only had $4,000 available and was willing to pay the amount.

County investigators became aware of the fraud and helped the victim convince the suspect to pick up the money in person. When the suspect arrived at the victim's home, authorities arrested him on charges of attempted embezzlement of an elderly adult and attempted grand larceny, according to the sheriff's office.

No details about the identity of the suspect or victim were immediately released.

The sheriff's office urged citizens and elderly relatives to warn them about the scam and to report similar incidents to local law enforcement.
