1 person dead, 1 injured in crash in Cascade County

MAJOR crashes – One person died and another was injured in a two-vehicle collision near Belt on Saturday.

The collision involved a Chevrolet Equinox driven by an 84-year-old woman from Arizona and a Peterbilt truck driven by a 35-year-old man from Canada.

According to the Montana Highway Patrol, the Chevy was westbound on Highway 331 approaching the intersection with U.S. Highway 89, and the truck was southbound on Highway 89.

Unable to yield, the driver of the Chevy entered Highway 89 at a “low rate of speed” and was struck by the truck as he crossed the intersection, according to the MHP accident report.

The Chevy spun several times and came to a stop on the side of the road. The truck driver lost control, left the road and crashed into a ditch.

Both drivers – the vehicles' only occupants – were taken to Benefis Health System hospital in Great Falls, where the driver of the Chevy was pronounced dead. Her name has not been released at this time.

There is no information available about the type or severity of the truck driver's injuries.

According to MHP, both drivers were wearing seatbelts and alcohol/drugs were not a factor in the accident.



(1ST REPORT, 4 p.m.) Emergency responders are on the scene of a multi-vehicle accident near Belt.

The crash was reported on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at approximately 2:15 p.m.

It happened near mile marker 74 on US Highway 89 at McCoy Road, at the turnoff to the Belt.

According to the Montana Highway Patrol, at least one person was injured.

According to the Montana Department of Transportation, traffic is restricted to one lane as emergency crews work to clear the scene.

No further details have been released at this time.
