Man arrested within hours of road stabbing

On Friday at approximately 10:37 p.m., Turlock Police, Turlock Fire and Patterson District Ambulance responded to an aggravated assault that had just occurred outside A's Barbershop in the 2400 block of W. Monte Vista Avenue.

The caller reported that a man had just been stabbed.

When emergency responders arrived on scene, they found the victim, later identified as Enrique Gomez, 49, of Turlock, outside the store and began CPR.

Gomez was initially scheduled to be transported to the hospital, but was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:08 p.m.

A crime scene was established and emergency services and investigators were notified.

Investigators arrived on scene and began their investigation. They determined the incident stemmed from a brief verbal altercation about road rage at a nearby apartment complex. The confrontation escalated into a physical altercation that culminated in a stabbing.

After reviewing the evidence collected and witness statements, investigators quickly identified the suspect, Ahmad Abweny, 28, of Modesto, and his vehicle.

Using license plate reading technology and working with the Modesto Police Department, investigators were able to locate and arrest Abweny just hours after the incident.

Abweny was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on a murder charge.

“Using license plate reading technology allowed our detectives to quickly assemble key evidence and apprehend the suspect,” said Chief Hedden. “This case demonstrates the power of modern technology to improve public safety and ensure the rapid resolution of all crimes committed in our city.”

“The Turlock Police Department thanks the Modesto Police Department for their critical assistance during the investigation,” said Public Affairs Analyst Sanchez.

The investigation is still ongoing. Anyone with helpful information is asked to call Detective Ulrich at 209-668-6570.
