'SNL' Season Premiere Cold Open Introduces Andy Samberg and Dana Carvey

Saturday Night Live makes fun of it Election 2024, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump – with a few new actors in the mix!

During the comedy sketch series' 50th season premiere on September 28, the show's cold opening featured the highly anticipated cast of some of the biggest faces in politics, including SNL Alum Andy Samberg takes on the role of Harris' husband Doug Emhoff and Dana Carvey as President Joe Biden. Meanwhile, Jim Gaffigan appeared as Harris' running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

Harris was portrayed by Maya Rudolph, while Trump was played by James Austin Johnson, who first voiced his portrayal of the former president in 2021.

The cold opening began with cast member Andrew Dismukes as journalist David Muir introducing Harris' rally before Rudolph appeared on stage and announced, “Your funny aunt has returned.”

“The fun has been restarted,” she said, adding, “Too funny, too angry.”

Rudolph's Harris soon introduced her vice president, Walz, as Gaffigan took the stage to cheers from the audience.

“Guys, I haven't been this excited since I got a 10% discount on a leaf blower from Menards,” he told the crowd, also noting, “I got this BDE: Big Dad Energy.”

“There's a saying in Minnesota: 'Mind your damn business.' There's another saying in Minnesota: “My nuts are frozen on the park bench,” an energetic Gaffigan, like Walz, told the audience.

However, Rudolph noted, “Tim isn’t the only white guy here today for Harris.”

Samberg’s Emhoff then appeared on stage and introduced himself: “This is Doug, the second gentleman. Also known as Charlie Brown if he grew up.”

During his speech, he revealed that he was “proud to be included in the distinguished list of presidential spouses throughout history. Women and men – but all women – who have stood at the president’s side.”

“I for one can’t wait to decorate the White House for Christmas. The theme will be Hanukkah,” Samberg joked as Harris’ husband.

Elsewhere in the skit, Dismukes' Muir introduced the audience to Trump's campaign, where Johnson's Trump admitted, among other jokes, that he wished Biden was still his opponent.

“We miss Joe Biden. What we wouldn’t give if he was standing next to me and was old,” he said. Yang's Vance soon appeared next door to “get this audience excited.” Harris' rally soon came around again, where Carvey appeared to express his admirable impression of Biden.

“I didn't want to. “You made me do it,” he once said, when Rudolph’s Harris thanked him for “handing over the reins.”

SNL's latest political cold open comes weeks before the upcoming presidential election, in which Harris (59) and Trump (78) will compete against each other.

Earlier this month, the opponents went head-to-head during a debate that aired on ABC on Tuesday, September 10. It was moderated by David Muir and Linsey Davis.

Trump said after the event that he would not take part in another debate with the vice president, which would be his third in the current election cycle, after previously facing off against President Joe Biden in June.

“THERE WILL BE NO THIRD DEBATE!” Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social on Thursday, September 12: “When a prizefighter loses a fight, the first words out of his mouth are: 'I WANT A REM -Fight'.” Polls clearly show that I won Tuesday night's debate against Comrade Kamala Harris, the radical left Democratic candidate, and she immediately called for a second debate.”

Harris called for another debate just minutes after leaving the stage – even though polls overwhelmingly declared her the evening's winner, not Trump.
