Deaths confirmed after small plane crashes in the Outer Banks

Several people died Saturday afternoon when a single-engine plane crashed into a wooded area near an airport in Kill Devil Hills on North Carolina's Outer Banks.

According to the National Park Service, the crash occurred near Wright Brothers National Memorial First Flight Airport around 5 p.m.

Eyewitnesses said they saw the plane attempting to land at the airport. However, the plane crashed and caught fire, and multiple agencies helped put it out, the park service said in a news release.

“The National Transportation Safety Board, an independent federal agency tasked with investigating civil aviation accidents in the United States, will investigate the incident. The Federal Aviation Administration has also been notified,” park service officials said.

The Wright Brothers National Memorial near the airport will remain closed Sunday, September 29 and the Facebook page will provide updates.
