Plane crash near Wright Brothers Memorial claims several lives

A single-engine plane crashed into the woods near Wright Brothers National Memorial First Flight Airport around 5 p.m. Saturday and officials report multiple fatalities.

According to the National Parks Service, a fire broke out after the crash and the plane burned. Officials say witnesses reported the plane attempting to land at the airport.

The fire was extinguished by the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department along with other local fire departments, according to a release.

The FFA will remain closed until further notice.

The National Transportation Safety Board, an independent federal agency tasked with investigating civil aviation accidents in the United States, will investigate the incident. The Federal Aviation Administration was also notified.
