Following an “initial investigation”, police said the Toyota Yaris was traveling along Whitworth Street West after exiting Deansgate when it “lost control” before colliding with a Vauxhall Corsa. The Yaris struck a curb and then collided with other road vehicles and a Kia Sportage.

“Regrettably, this also resulted in a collision involving two pedestrians, an 18-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman, and both remain in hospital with life-threatening injuries,” GMP said in its statement.

A 30-year-old woman was arrested at the scene and remains in custody on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Detective Constable Simon Venguedasalon, from GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Since this incident we have carried out our investigation overnight and are now in a position to appeal to the public who were in the area for eyewitness accounts and footage.

“We understand there were numerous witnesses to the incident due to the location at the time and would urge you to come forward if we have not already spoken to you.”

“As part of our investigation, it is important for us to fully understand the moment before the serious collision to ensure we can provide the necessary answers to the victims’ families, who are currently still receiving treatment.”
