The Kentucky Democratic Party is banning a Lexington city councilwoman accused of sexual misconduct from events

The Kentucky Democratic Party has banned a Lexington city councilwoman accused of sexual misconduct from attending Democratic Party events in the state.

According to Jonathan Levin, a spokesman for the KDP, the Kentucky Democratic Party Central Committee voted Saturday to also remove Lexington-Fayette Urban County Councilwoman Brenda Monarrez from all communications channels.

The request was as follows:

“Motion to remove Brenda Monarrez from all KDP-sponsored events and all KDP internal communications, and also to ban her from all official KDP-sponsored events, due to serious and well-documented allegations of sexual misconduct against her.”

Monarrez said she was not informed of the party's actions before or after the vote on the ban.

“I was not notified of any proposed action in advance and did not receive any notification of a decision after the fact,” Monarrez said. “I was not permitted to comment, answer questions or present any defense or evidence.”

At the same Saturday meeting, the party also voted to ban Rep. Daniel Grossberg, a representative from Louisville, from attending KDP events. Grossberg has been accused by multiple people of sexually inappropriate behavior, including communication and interaction.

Lexington City Councilwoman Denise Gray said Monarrez was sexually aggressive toward her twice in three years in a request for an emergency protective order that was granted Aug. 8.

As part of the terms of this protective order, Monarrez must attend council meetings virtually and work from her home office.

A hearing is scheduled for Oct. 14 to decide whether the protective order should remain in effect.

Monarrez has vigorously denied the allegations, saying they are baseless and politically motivated.

A protection order is a civil matter. No criminal charges were filed.

Monarrez will face Emma Curtis, who has come forward as one of Grossberg's victims, for the Fourth District Council seat on Nov. 5. The race is nonpartisan. Both Curtis and Monarrez are active in the Kentucky Democratic Party.
