Indy woman arrested in connection with Hancock Co. overdose death

Stephanie Schofield was formally charged on September 27 with trafficking in a controlled substance resulting in death, obstruction of justice and giving false information.

NEW PALESTINE, Ind. – An Indianapolis woman has been arrested after a nearly year-long investigation into a fatal drug overdose in Hancock County, police said.

According to online court records, Stephanie Schofield, 38, was formally charged on Sept. 27 with possession of a controlled substance resulting in death, obstruction of justice and giving false information.

The New Palestine Police Department said officers responded to the 4500 block of South 400 West on October 19, 2023 for a welfare check. Schofield called 911 and fled after saying it was possibly a medical emergency, police said.

Officers found Jerry Moore II unresponsive at the scene. He was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Police said autopsy results showed Moore died of a drug overdose.

“After a nearly 10-month investigation that included obtaining social media records and cell phone data, an arrest warrant was issued for the caller, Stephanie Schofield,” New Palestine PD said in a social media statement. Schofield was arrested on September 27th.

Online records do not currently list any future court dates in this case.
