What is BioLab, what does BioLab produce | Conyers chemical fire

CONYERS, Ga. — A chemical fire at a laboratory in Conyers sent much of the city into an evacuation zone Sunday.

The fire broke out at a BioLab facility northwest of downtown Conyers. Everything between Sigman Road and I-20 in the city is within the evacuation zone.

District officials said a sprinkler head malfunctioned around 5 a.m., creating a mixture containing a “water-reactive chemical,” which in turn started a small fire on the building's roof. The fire has now been contained and extinguished. Rockdale County officials said this was the third incident at the plant in seven years in which products mixed with water and caused a chemical reaction.

Crews said they were working to remove the chemicals but noted that process could take several hours. The EPA is also expected to be on site to test air quality in the area.

According to its website, BioLab is based in Lawrenceville and is the “swimming pool and spa water care division of KIK Consumer Products.”

The company makes brands like BioGuard and SpaGuard and claims to be “pioneering computerized water testing and the 3-step system for pool and spa care.”

BioLab also touts its products as “leading specialty chemicals brands” Natural Chemistry, SeaKlear, AquaPill and Coral Sea. They also say they make professional products called ProGuard and Pro Series.

It is unclear what chemicals could be involved in triggering the situation. Conyers; In a similar fire in 2004, authorities said chlorine was one of the chemicals involved. Officials described a fire that caused a sprinkler system to go off, and the chemical cloud was partly a reaction between the water and the chemicals.
