Lindsey Graham refuses to condemn Trump by calling Kamala Harris 'mentally disabled'

While speaking to CNN's Jake Tapper on Sunday's “State of the Union,” Lindsey Graham refused to condemn Donald Trump by telling Saturday rally attendees that Kamala Harris is “mentally disabled.” The Republican senator initially dodged Tapper's question before appearing to suggest that Trump meant Harris was “crazy.” Graham said: “I just think the better way is to pursue the case that their policies are destroying the country. “They're crazy liberals.”

Speaking to supporters in Wisconsin on Saturday, Trump said: “Kamala is mentally disabled. Joe Biden was mentally disabled, Kamala was born that way. If you think about it, only a mentally disabled person could have allowed something like this to happen to our country.”

Tapper pointed out to Graham, “First of all, there are actual people with intellectual disabilities, and this is an insult to them,” before adding, “Second, Vice President Kamala Harris is not mentally impaired.”

Graham didn't address Trump's claim, replying: “No, I just think she's a crazy liberal.” He turned to his own interpretation of Trump's message, telling Tapper: “I just think the better way is there.” “Their policies are destroying the country.”

Tapper took the opportunity to clarify to Graham that the statistics he cited “spanned decades,” meaning that “some of the people you're talking about are people who came into the country during Trump” and “some of sit them in prison.” Many of them are in prison for their crimes, not in ICE prisons, but in federal prisons.”

Trump has a long history of publicly mocking people with disabilities. He came under fire in 2015 when he mocked New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski, who suffers from arthrogryposis, a congenital joint disorder that results in limited use of the arms. Trump also accused Kovaleski of exploiting his disability for the Tribune, adding that the journalist should “go back to reporting for a newspaper that is quickly going bankrupt.”

The New York Times continues to operate nearly a decade later and Kovaleski is still a staff member.
