Two hospital workers accused of abusing a Hong Kong girl who suffered cardiac arrest have been granted bail

A Hong Kong court has granted bail to a nurse and a healthcare assistant accused of abusing a four-year-old child whose heart stopped after a stitching operation in which they were involved.

Registered nurse Cheung Tin-wing, 26, and patient attendant Wan Mei-kwan, 62, appeared in Sha Tin Court on Monday on a joint charge of mistreatment or neglect by carers of a child during surgery at Yan Chai Hospital on May 25th.

Prosecutors did not ask Cheung and Wan to comment at this time, as the hearing was adjourned for 12 weeks until December 23.

The girl's medical report, hospital records and witness statements would be obtained for further investigation.

Acting Chief Judge Cheang Kei-hong granted the couple bail of HK$10,000 (US$1,286), but imposed additional conditions. The defendants were required to remain in Hong Kong, have no contact with prosecution witnesses and report to the police twice a week.
