Employee dies after falling 15 feet while working at an industrial facility

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC/Gray News) – An industrial plant employee has died after falling 15 feet at work.

The Century Aluminum employee was pronounced dead at the scene by the Berkeley County Coroner's Office.

Berkeley County Coroner Darnell Hartwell identified Daniel E. McCoy, 61, of Summerville, as the victim.

Hartwell says the coroner's office was notified about 4:54 p.m. Friday that McCoy died of traumatic injuries after falling about 15 feet at Century Aluminum Company in Goose Creek.

Berkeley County EMS and Goose Creek Rural Fire Department also responded to the incident.

Century Aluminum released a statement following the employee's death:

It is with deep sadness and regret that we confirm that one of our employees passed away following an incident at our Mt Holly facility on September 27th. We support the grieving family and our team stands ready to support colleagues grieving their loss. In addition to on-site advice and support services, employees have access to a 24-hour hotline for ongoing support. As part of our standard emergency response, an internal investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of the incident. We will work with local authorities and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to understand the details of the incident. Although we don't have all the answers yet, we are committed to working diligently through the process because safety remains our top priority. For now, our primary focus remains the well-being of the family and employees affected by this incident. To respect the family's privacy and protect the integrity of the investigation, we will refrain from further comment at this time.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Berkeley County Coroner's Office are investigating the case.
