Hurricane Helene claims over 90 lives in the USA: shocking videos show the extent of the tragedy

Sep 30, 2024, 11:29 AM IST

Hurricane Helene claimed over 90 lives across the Southeast and caused widespread damage to infrastructure and communities.

Hurricane Helene made landfall last week as a Category 4 storm, lashing the Gulf Coast of Florida and parts of Georgia. This was followed by destruction in regions of North Carolina over the weekend, leaving a trail of the most horrific destruction: washed out roads, landslides, no cell service and electricity for millions. As the New York Times reported, the hurricane caused devastating damage in regions such as Tennessee, South Carolina and Virginia, claiming more than 90 lives across the Southeast and destroying large swaths of communities.

Highlights of the destruction caused by Hurricane Helene so far

Hurricane Helene led to one of the cruelest tragedies of 2024.

  1. Helene brought heavy rains and life-threatening landslides to the North Carolina region, creating a crisis. Cell service and power are out in all counties, resulting in complete disconnection from the state. People cannot make emergency calls to 911 because there is no cell service or medical assistance in the area during a crisis. Officials in Buncombe County called for portable towers.
  2. Debris and destroyed or fallen trees, as well as flooding, have caused more than 400 roads in North Carolina to be closed and gas stations to run out of fuel. Officials have told residents to assume all roads are closed and only emergency vehicles are allowed to operate.
  3. With support from search and rescue teams from other states and the federal government, the state of North Carolina on Sunday airdropped food to people in cut-off regions and repaired shattered water systems.
  4. The hurricane set a record in the Big Bend region of Florida when it hit the area with winds of 140 kilometers per hour and warm sea temperatures. This is the strongest storm the region has ever experienced.
  5. The hurricane is responsible for destroying a community on the tiny island of Cedar Key in the Gulf of Mexico. Michael Bobbit, who lives there, delivered the news that the community had “completely disappeared,” the New York Times reported.
  6. The hurricane spread its tentacles into regions of Tampa Bay that had rarely if ever experienced flooding, leaving them wondering whether it was still worth living there.
  7. Across North Carolina and Florida, Helene fell from riverbanks and tornadoes, causing power outages as far away as Cincinnati. The Nolichucky Dam in eastern Tennessee was on the verge of collapse before water receded Saturday.
  8. Fifteen flood-related deaths were reported across Georgia, prompting the White House to accept emergency requests for federal assistance from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Alabama regions before Helene wreaked further havoc.
  9. President Biden tasked FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell to assess damage in the region, with over 1,270 rescuers deployed.
  10. Over 90 confirmed storm-related deaths in six states: 37 in North Carolina, 25 in South Carolina (including 2 firefighters), 11 in Florida, and deaths in Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia.

Scary pictures from the storm regions

The most horrific and chilling photos and videos come from the areas hit by Hurricane Helene, which left millions of people homeless, hungry and without electricity or cell service.

Another frightening video emerged online showing muddy water approaching land at dangerous speeds, while another showed flooding of the house, destroying everything.

The photos from the affected regions are just as disturbing as the videos that keep appearing. A user posted some photos of downed utility poles and trees due to the storm. Another user posted the only surviving thing from her mother's crib after the flood.

The storm led to road closures in several areas due to flooding, landslides and heavy rain, with the death toll expected to rise in the coming days.
