MONTEGO BAY, St. James – A long-running land dispute is being blamed for an incident between a woman and a young boy that led to her being taken to court.

Sharon Brackett appeared before presiding judge Natiesha Fairclough Hylton at St James Parish Court last Wednesday and was charged with assault.

The child in question appears to be between 10 and 12 years old.

According to court documents, they are neighbors.

It is believed that the youth and the accused woman were involved in an argument on August 15 around 2:30 p.m. Brackett went to the appellant's yard and began taking the boy's clothing off the line. She then allegedly walked onto his porch and spit in his face.

After hearing the allegations, Judge Fairclough-Hylton asked the defendant if she had spat in the boy's face. Brackett denied the allegation.

She told the court that she had faced significant hardship over the past three years and that the authorities were already aware of the situation.

“I'm going through hell; They say it’s their country and I can’t stay there,” Brackett said.

The judge then referred the case to the lay court for consideration on October 18.
