Doctor's rape and murder case in Kolkata LIVE: SC will soon resume hearing of suo motu plea

Members of the West Bengal Junior Doctors Front told the Supreme Court that they “in principle” want to return to work after over a month of protests against the brutal rape and murder of their young colleague at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at a meeting on Monday (September 16, 2024), but they were still gripped by a “fear psychosis”.

Appearing before a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, senior counsel for the junior doctors, Indira Jaising, confided in the courtroom that those behind the “cover-up” of the gruesome crime of January 9, .August was still “roaming” in the hospital and would expose her to harassment when she returned to work.

Ms Jaising said an “agreement” was reached after the fifth round of talks with Ms Banerjee on Monday (September 16, 2024). She said the front sent 40 representatives to the meeting despite the fact that the state had not fulfilled any of the conditions set by the Supreme Court on September 9 for doctors to start work at 5 p.m. the next day The senior lawyer said the front would hold a general meeting “today or tomorrow” to reach a “broad consensus.” There may be a “time gap” before a final call is answered.
