Sibu Hospital is struggling with condensation and mold is growing amid leaky ceilings near the maternity ward

SIBU, September 30 – Sibu Hospital continues to be affected by condensation problems due to the recent incident on the ground floor of the hospital.

Water could be seen dripping from the ceiling onto the hallway between the maternity ward and the operating room.

Several buckets were placed on the floor to catch water dripping from the ceiling, while “cleaning in progress” signs were posted throughout the area to inform visitors. Mold was also found in certain areas of the affected ceiling.

A visitor who spoke to The Borneo Post Speaking on condition of anonymity, he expressed concerns that people could trip and fall due to the wet ground.

“Although there are signs warning visitors, I don’t think that’s the solution. If you are not careful, there is a risk of people tripping and falling, which could result in injury.

“I hope the hospital management can resolve the matter as soon as possible to avoid any untoward incident,” he said.

It was recently reported that the children's ward, women's surgical ward and women's orthopedic ward were also suffering from condensation problems.

The condensation issues were first highlighted on November 12, 2023 by a concerned person who discovered that part of the ceiling in the children's ward was dripping water and mold was growing in certain areas of the ceiling.

On November 14 last year, Deputy Health Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni said during a visit to the hospital that the federal government had approved RM2 million to set the affected caps.

On May 28 this year, Sibu Hospital Visitors Committee Chairman Michael Lee said The Borneo Post that Sibu Hospital was awaiting the enforcement order to begin repairs to the ceiling of the children's ward to address the condensation problem. — The Borneo Post
