​One person and a dog died in a fire at the San Leandro apartment complex

SAN LEANDRO, Calif. (AP) — One person and a dog died in a fire at an apartment complex in San Leandro on Sunday, authorities said.

At approximately 3:23 p.m., the Alameda County Fire Department responded to a two-alarm fire at a residence in the 14600 block of Washington Avenue.

According to the fire department, the entire apartment was on fire. There were three people inside at the time and two were able to escape. One person and the family's dog succumbed to the fire and died.

In total, four apartments were damaged by the fire and twelve people were left homeless. The displaced residents are being supported by the Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
