Wayne Rooney: Plymouth have a good mix of attacking players

“There will probably be one of them disappointed every week because they’re not playing and that’s part of football – but it’s a long season.”

“At the end of the day, you want one of them to score consistently, and then that makes your decision a little easier.”

Rooney has only managed one win in his first six league games at Argyle so far but remains positive about the progress his side have made in a difficult run of games.

“I think we're starting to see an identity in the team and it's a change from the team last season,” Rooney said.

“We want to try to win the ball, but we also want to be very effective with it. We don’t want to pass the ball just for the sake of passing the ball.”

“I looked at the data from the last four games and saw that we are fourth in the league. I spoke to the strikers about living in the moment when we get into dangerous areas and come alive to try and score goals. “That's the one thing we need to improve on.

The former England captain was also impressed by academy player Tegan Finn, who would add even more depth to his attacking line.

“He [Finn] “Is in the first team squad,” said Rooney. “He’ll relapse again.” [to the youth academy] to play games when he needs playing time, but I think what's important is that he's with us and available for selection. I have no problem including him in the squad and playing against him.

“I really enjoyed what I saw from him in pre-season in Spain. Now we have to bring him up to speed, but I’m really excited about him.”

Meanwhile, Rooney is confident his team will be ready for Friday's Luton game, adding: “I think our preparation has been excellent this week, both in terms of what we expect from Luton and what we expect from Luton. what we expect from ourselves.”

“I think we can definitely win the game – but we have to do our best.”
