'The Marvels' Budget Leaks ($378M) – Losses of Nearly $300M – World of Reel

“The Marvels” was the low point of the MCU. There is no doubt about that. It will take some time before a major box office bomb arrives. The entire film was a disastrous failure. The film had original characters Loss of over $237 millionbut that number has just increased dramatically.

Disney's fiscal year ends at the end of September, so we're getting a flood of movie tax credit returns. One of these documents has leakedand it shows that Disney/Marvel lost a lot more money than was initially implied by the transactions. The number is currently around $295 million to $300 million.

According to the documents, The Marvels cost $378 million to produce, easily making it one of the most expensive films of all time. The reported final budget for the deals was $270 million, meaning they were off by a whopping $100 million.

If you dig into the details of this file, you'll learn that Disney/Marvel spent over $100 million in the last year of production – after the first round of reshoots – which seems to confirm that a second round of reshoots definitely took place has.

The Marvels was the first MCU film ever to fail to break $100 million domestically, and it didn't come close to that number either, finishing its run with a paltry $83 million. It might be the biggest disaster Disney has ever produced.

As part of his damage control campaign, Disney CEO Bob Iger indirectly blamed the pandemic and “Marvels” director Nia DaCosta, the first Black female director to ever direct an MCU film. During an interview during the New York Times DealBook SummitIger claimed that DaCosta needed additional help to make her film better, but it never materialized due to COVID.

Suffice to say, Disney needed a scapegoat for the massive failure and they decided it would be DaCosta. We should also note that DaCosta admitted that he had no creative control over the film and clearly stated that The Marvels was very much “a Kevin Feige production” and “his film.”
