Verizon's cell service is down across the country

Verizon is experiencing a massive outage of its wireless services across the country.

“During the incident, we received reports from Benton, Brookland, Washington, Dover, Brandon, Cape Coral, Clermont, Naples, Ocala, Oviedo, Palm Bay, Rockledge, St. Petersburg, Atlanta, Dalton, Decatur, Bloomington, Carmel, Cloverdale, Fishers and 223 other cities,” according to a website tracking the outage.

There are also more than 100,000 user reports of problems with Downdetector. Downdetector's outage map shows hotspots in many locations, including New York and Atlanta. Based on this map, it looks like the outages are occurring more frequently on the East Coast.

Verizon responds to several people's complaints through its support account. Many users report to this account that their phones are in SOS mode.

“We are aware of an issue affecting service for some customers,” Verizon spokesman Ilya Hemlin said in a statement The edge. “Our engineers are committed and we are working quickly to identify and resolve the issue.”

Updates, September 30th: Added Verizon statement, updated quote on reports about which cities are affected, and noted that Downdetector now shows more than 100,000 user reports.
