Man accused of running over his ex-girlfriend in Pompano Beach pleads not guilty

POMPANO BEACH, Fla – Handcuffed 32-year-old Edwin Amaya appeared in court for his arraignment Monday and pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder.

Amaya is accused of running over his ex-girlfriend Brenda Amaya twice with his truck in front of their children in Pompano Beach in September.

The attack, which authorities say was witnessed by her three children, left the family in deep chaos.

“She was a really good mother,” her daughter told the court through tears.

Amaya, 29, a mother of three, had a two-year-old son with the suspect.

According to investigators, the fatal incident occurred on September 21 following an argument over the child.

According to authorities, Edwin Amaya became aggressive when he arrived at an apartment on Southwest Eighth Street in Pompano Beach and threatened to shoot everyone.

Instead, Amaya allegedly got into his Ford F-150 and crashed into Brenda.

“We are finding probable cause,” the judge said as video footage of the crash was paused in court.

Amaya fled the scene but was later captured and taken into custody. He remains in jail without bail after a judge denied his release last week.

Brenda Amaya's 10-year-old daughter shared the toll her mother's death took on her family.

“She didn’t trust anyone except my grandma and aunts to look after us. She was my queen of everything,” she said.

Brenda Hernández.

Police said Amaya drove off but was arrested a short time later just off Dixie Highway.

A GoFundMe page has been created to help Hernandez's family return her body to Honduras.
