Jamie Tran, gunman charged with hate crime shooting against Jews in Pico-Robertson, is scheduled to be sentenced today

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — The man accused of shooting two Jewish men in Pico-Robertson last year is scheduled to be sentenced Monday.

Jamie Tran pleaded guilty to two counts of hate crimes with intent to kill and two counts of illegal use of a firearm earlier this year. Tran is expected to receive a prison sentence of 35 to 40 years.

“These horrific acts – motivated by toxic, anti-Semitic beliefs – shocked our community,” U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada said in a statement at the time. “Law enforcement will continue to work together to prevent and punish hate crimes. We remain committed and stand with our Jewish community and others to confront hateful acts.”

Tran allegedly researched kosher market locations and traveled to Pico-Robertson in February 2023, where he allegedly shot a Jewish man near a synagogue. According to authorities, he returned to the same area the next day and shot another Jewish man at close range. Both victims survived the shootings.

The man accused of shooting two Jewish men in the Pico-Robertson area of Los Angeles was “on the FBI's radar” because of “hateful” comments before the attacks, LAPD Chief Michel Moore said.

According to authorities, he was arrested the following day and remained in custody. Tran was prohibited from owning firearms for mental health reasons, but is said to have purchased two firearms through a third party in January 2023.

According to the press release, Tran had been making anti-Semitic comments since 2018, when he made “hateful statements” about other students while studying dentistry.

In 2022, authorities said, Tran emailed anti-Semitic statements to former classmates, including excerpts from a website that described Jewish people as “primitive.”

“I am grateful for the hard work our investigators and prosecutors put into this case,” said Los Angeles Police Chief Dominic Choi. “Hate crimes impact the fabric of our communities and our safety. The Los Angeles Police Department is stronger and better able to serve the people of Los Angeles through our federal partnerships.”
