Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes admitted he indirectly helped cause a knee injury to wide receiver Rashee Rice.

Mahomes threw an interception in the first quarter and accidentally rolled into Rice's leg as he tried to tackle Chargers cornerback Kristian Fulton.

“Rashee really played a good game,” he told reporters. “I tried to tackle the guy but obviously rolled on top of him. If I don’t turn the ball over, that never happens.”

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Chiefs believe Rice may have torn his ACL pending further testing.

The second-year wideout was well on his way to a breakout campaign. He caught 24 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns in Kansas City's first three games and was Mahomes' preferred target.

The Chiefs were already playing without running back Isiah Pacheco, who is recovering from a broken fibula. Wideout Marquise “Hollywood” Brown didn’t even get to dress before landing on injured reserve. Now the offense is even more undermanned.

That Rice was injured under such unpredictable circumstances only adds to the sense of frustration.

For now, the responsibility falls on first-round pick Xavier Worthy, who will take on a larger role in the passing game. Especially if Rice is out for the year, the front office might have little choice but to bring in reinforcements to keep the Chiefs' three-peat on track.
