Heuston trains severely delayed due to incident on tracks – The Irish Times

Major delays following an incident on a railway line on Monday left many commuters waiting for hours at Heuston station in Dublin.

Services have been suspended following a “tragic incident” between Sallins and Kildare, which Irish Rail said resulted in traffic leaving Heuston being held up for hours as emergency services attended the scene.

It had warned commuters on Monday afternoon that it expected “significant disruption” to its services and that it was working to organize bus transfers “where possible” for commuters waiting at the station.

Many commuters remained stranded at Heuston station hours later on Monday evening, around four hours after significant disruption was initially announced.

Many who arrived just before 6pm on their way home from work were only aware of the delays when they saw the departure board saying all trains were affected.

The crowd, which grew larger as the evening progressed, awaited news of their scheduled departures to Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Galway and Westport, all of which were delayed.

Some who arrived hours before their scheduled departure said they received little or no information, with the majority relying on updates from Irish Rail on X (formerly Twitter).

Some reported large numbers of commuters leaving after the initial announcement on Monday, while others left the station in dribs and drabs throughout the evening.

The route between Sallins and Kildare reopened shortly after 5.30pm, although Irish Rail warned that significant disruption was still expected.

Services resumed at 6pm, with some trains to Limerick, Galway, Westport and Cork delayed between two and three hours.

A service to Cork was delayed by three hours and 20 minutes, while two other services to Cork were canceled. Other services due to arrive in Heuston were also affected by the long delays.

The crowds had largely dispersed by 8 p.m. as more services began operating.
