VIDEO: Drone captures historic flooding in Asheville's River Arts District

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A historic neighborhood in Asheville is recovering after devastating flooding during Hurricane Helene inundated the area.

A drone video from Asheville's famed River Arts District (RAD) on Saturday showed how deep and destructive the flooding was, leaving entire buildings underwater.

In the video, water from the flooded French Broad River flows through the district, reaching the roofs of some buildings.

An excerpt from the video shows cars driving over a bridge, with flood water not far below.

According to NOAA's National Water Prediction Service, the French Broad River in Asheville peaked Friday evening, breaking a record at 24.67 feet.

The previous record was measured at 23.1 feet during the Great Flood of 1916, according to NOAA.

According to the RAD website, the district serves as a creative outlet for more than 300 artists. According to the website, it has been home to area artists since the 1980s.

French Broad River water levels are beginning to fall and are expected to return to normal levels by the end of the week.
