Google is testing universal video search with Circle to Search

Google continues to expand its search capabilities and now appears to be focusing on video. An APK teardown suggests that Google is working on a new feature that could revolutionize the way we search for information in videos. This new feature, possibly called “Search This Video,” aims to make it easier for users to search for specific content in any video they find on their phone. Currently, Google only offers limited options for searching videos. You can use AI Overview to search from a video recording, or you can use Gemini's Ask About This Video tool while watching YouTube videos. However, this new feature promises a more general approach that will allow users to search within any video, regardless of the source.

Evidence of this new feature was discovered in version 15.39.39.29.arm64 of the Google Android app. References to a new method for searching videos were found, including a text string that specifically mentions “Search this video” in reference to “omnient,” which is Google's code name for Circle to Search. Additionally, a new icon has also been discovered that references omnium and video playback.

Although the feature is not yet active, its potential is significant. It could allow users to search within videos they have recorded themselves, videos embedded on websites, and even videos on platforms like YouTube. This versatility would be a huge advantage, providing users with a consistent and convenient way to find information in videos.

However, it's important to temper expectations until we see the feature implemented. There are still some questions that remain unanswered. Does the feature work in social media apps where videos are the focus? Does it work with all Android devices that support Circle to Search or only flagship devices? While this would be a welcome addition, implementing such functionality could pose technical challenges.

Personally, I find the prospect of a universal video search feature exciting as it could greatly improve my ability to find specific information in videos and save me time and effort. However, I'm also curious to see how Google will address potential challenges, such as compatibility with third-party apps and ensuring accurate search results. I'm excited to see how this feature will develop in the future.
