Meeting scheduled with residents to discuss chemical leak in Whitewater Township

The Whitewater Township Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting Tuesday after a chemical leak last week led to more than 24 hours of evacuations. Whitewater Township will hold the meeting along with the Miami Township Board of Trustees and representatives from the Village of Cleves. During the meeting, officials will share and discuss information with residents and businesses following chemical spills last week that affected some people more than one had been kept away from their homes for a day. The leak occurred Sept. 24 on U.S. 50 between State Route 128 and Valley Junction Road, not far from the Great Miami River. A train car began venting styrene around 1 p.m. and continued late into the night Tuesday half a mile away from the leak, while a shelter-in-place order was also put in place for nearby residents. On Wednesday evening, those orders were lifted, allowing residents to return home, but not without some frustration at how the process was unfolding. No Medical emergencies were reported due to the leak. Officials said multiple agencies would be available to speak with residents, including The Central Railroad of Indiana, Hamilton County Public Health, the Hamilton County Emergency Management Agency and the Whitewater Township Fire Department. The event will take place Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Township Community Center on Dry Fork Road in Cleves.

Whitewater Township will co-host the meeting with the Miami Township Board of Trustees and representatives from the Village of Cleves.

At the meeting, officials will share information and discuss with residents and businesses following last week's chemical spill that kept some people away from their homes for more than a day.

The leak occurred Sept. 24 on U.S. 50, between State Route 128 and Valley Junction Road, near the Great Miami River.

A train car began dumping styrene around 1 p.m. and continued until late Tuesday night.

While the leak occurred, an evacuation order was issued for residents within a half-mile radius of the leak, while a shelter-in-place order was also issued for nearby residents.

On Wednesday evening, those orders were lifted, allowing residents to return home, but not without some frustration at how the process was unfolding.

No medical emergencies were reported due to the leak.

Officials said multiple agencies would be available to speak with residents, including the Central Railroad of Indiana, Hamilton County Public Health, the Hamilton County Emergency Management Agency and the Whitewater Township Fire Department.

The event will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Township Community Center on Dry Fork Road in Cleves.
