A man accused of stealing from his family faced his first court hearing last week in Elkhart County.

Police responded to a call at Faith Mission, where a friend told police that Evan Milianta allegedly had a stolen firearm.

Milanta told officers he found the gun on Franklin Street, but a search of his backpack turned up bullets.

Police later investigated a burglary nearby in which a woman accused Milianta – her family member – of stealing items from her home, including electronics and jewelry.

The Goshen News said he eventually admitted taking the gun, saying it was to protect himself from threats against her family members.

Milianta has been appointed a public defender and a jury trial is scheduled for March 3.
