3 dead, 15 injured in stabbing in Chinese supermarket

Shanghai, China:

A man killed three people and injured 15 in a knife attack in a supermarket in the Chinese city of Shanghai, police announced on Tuesday.

The suspected attacker, a 37-year-old man surnamed Lin, was arrested shortly after the incident at the supermarket on Monday evening, local police said in a statement.

Police said the man went on the rampage out of anger, sparked by a “personal financial dispute.”

Eighteen injured people were taken to hospital for treatment, where three died, they added.

The other 15 suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Violent knife crime is not uncommon in China, where firearms are strictly controlled, and there have been a number of similar attacks on schools in recent years.

A Japanese student was stabbed and died from his injuries in the southern city of Shenzhen in September, sparking outrage in Tokyo.

And in May, a man killed eight people and injured another with a knife in the city of Xiaogan in central Hubei province.
