Hunter Water introduces new leak detection technologies

To improve water security in the region, Hunter Water is introducing a range of new leak detection technologies.

Hunter Water managing director Darren Cleary says detecting and fixing leaks is a top priority. Recent initiatives have reduced leakage by 27 percent across the organization's 5,000-kilometer water pipeline network.

“Finding and fixing hidden leaks and predicting burst water pipes can be challenging across our wide and complex pipe network, but our investments in new technologies and innovations help our teams work efficiently and effectively,” he said.

Hunter Water is currently testing the implementation of new digital meters for customers, with wireless communication devices providing real-time insights into water usage.

The number of flow meters and monitoring devices operated in the network has also been significantly increased.

Mr Cleary says these programs, which run alongside a new partnership with the University of Adelaide, enable a “multi-faceted approach to the complex challenge of leak detection”.

“We worked with the University of Adelaide to test their advanced leak detection system.

“This system uses state-of-the-art machine learning models to detect and locate leaks by analyzing vibrations.

“The trial is showing great success and has already identified six leaks on our network,” Mr Cleary said.

Hunter Water is also rehabilitating and replacing key aging infrastructure such as reservoirs and trunk lines to prevent leaks and ensure the network continues to operate reliably.

As an additional measure, pressure reducing valves are installed in network areas with high pressure.

“Reducing losses across our network is critical to our business and our diverse and evolving program underscores our commitment to water conservation and optimizing network performance,” Mr Cleary said.

“The Lower Hunter Water Security Plan describes Hunter Water’s role in making optimal use of its existing water sources and ensuring water security for the region.

“Detecting and reducing leaks plays an important role in this,” Mr Cleary said.
