Chinese husband accused of abuse flees courtroom with wife on back and refuses to divorce

A court in southwest China rejected a divorce petition despite the husband being accused of domestic violence and carrying his wife out of the courtroom during the trial.

The woman, surnamed Chen, from Sichuan Province, had been married to her husband Li for 20 years. According to the Shanghai Morning Post, the couple has two sons and a daughter.

Recently, Chen filed for divorce, citing domestic violence as the reason and claiming the relationship had completely broken down. Chen said Li became violent toward her when he was drunk.

However, the court did not agree to the divorce as it claimed that there was still a “deep emotional bond” between the couple and reconciliation was still possible. They were also convinced that Li did not want a divorce.

Chen was dissatisfied with the verdict and appealed.
