A 21-year-old college student suspected of murder in Georgia was tracked down and arrested by police while hiding out at a small community college in New York.

According to law enforcement, Dawensley Astrel was attending SUNY Broome Community College in Binghamton when he was arrested on Sept. 16. Georgia State University police had issued a warrant for his arrest.

“It's not every day that you take someone into custody for a murder on a college campus,” Capt. Frederick J. Akshar II of the Broome County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) told Fox News Digital.

Akshar and his team tracked down Astrel after the BCSO received information that the college student had an active warrant for his arrest for murder in Georgia.

“We have a crime analysis center here. Our people at the Crime Analysis Center were able to tell us in real time from the Georgian authorities that they were looking for Mr. Astrel,” Akshar said. “Knowing he was wanted for a murder in Georgia and possibly had a connection to that particular region, our community college partners and our law enforcement partners recognized the name as a possible student.”

He added that authorities quickly learned that Astrel had provided the college with an incorrect home address.

“One of the first questions I asked … was would we conduct a search of his apartment? I thought there might be evidence of the murder, but we couldn't verify exactly where Mr. Astrel was. The address he had gave what was an older address… which he was no longer associated with,” Akshar explained.

The BCSO coordinated with SUNY Broome Campus Safety to arrest Astrel without incident while he was on campus. Astrel was enrolled at Broome Community College on a part-time basis and lived off campus, the college told Fox News Digital in a statement.

“Our detective agency … conducted what I would describe as a three-day surveillance operation. And then on the third day, we were able to take him into custody while he was at the community college,” Akshar said.

While Akshar could not reveal the exact time frame of the crime or provide any additional information about the murder, he said that Broome County police have been searching for the murder suspect for about a week.

“Our region in general is kind of… in the middle of the major cities in upstate New York,” Akshar said. “And you know, we often deal with people who may have committed a murder in Rochester, come to Binghamton to hide, or committed a murder in the city of New York and come to Binghamton to to hide,” Akshar said. “So I think this type of crime and people wanted for this type of crime are not unusual for us. But, you know, finding yourself on a college campus and having someone in custody for murder, let alone a student, is not a common occurrence.

“College operations were not impacted and at no time was there any danger to students or staff, which is always our top priority,” SUNY Broome Community College said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

Georgia State University police did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital seeking comment or information about the case. No information about the Georgia murder case has been released.

“I think it was a very collaborative and coordinated effort by law enforcement to take a very dangerous individual into custody without harming anyone else,” Akshar said.

Astrel is expected to be delivered to Georgia sometime next week, the BCSO told Fox News Digital.
