Utica woman armed with fork arrested for assault


UTICA, NY – A 27-year-old woman was arrested Sept. 29 in connection with an attack in which two people were stabbed with a fork during an altercation on Hillcrest Avenue. The suspect, identified as Shamya Hammett, was charged with assault and weapons possession, Utica police said.

The incident occurred on September 20 when officers were dispatched to 929 Hillcrest Avenue to investigate an assault. According to police, two victims reported that there was an argument between one of the victims and an unknown woman. When the second victim tried to intervene, the suspect attacked both people.

During the attack, Hammett allegedly brandished a fork and swung it at the victims, stabbing their faces and bodies. The suspect fled the scene before police arrived.

Following an investigation by the Criminal Investigations Division, Hammett was identified as the suspect. She has been charged with second-degree assault, attempted second-degree assault, and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

  • Child injured in Northwest DC shooting, teenage suspect still at large

    Washington, D.C. – A 12-year-old boy was shot in the leg in northwest D.C. Monday evening, officials said. The shooting happened in the 5900 block of Georgia Avenue around 4:23 p.m.

    The injured child was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities are asking residents to be on the lookout for a suspect described as a teenager wearing a white T-shirt, black pants and a black hoodie tied around his waist.

  • 13-year-old arrested with handgun in Paterson

    PATERSON, NJ - A 13-year-old was arrested by Paterson Police Department investigators Friday after he was found in possession of a semi-automatic handgun with an extended magazine, a statement from the department said.

    This is the second firearm-related arrest for the teenager, who was taken into custody last year after accidentally shooting himself in the leg.

    Police emphasized the importance of community participation in maintaining public safety. “Public safety in Paterson is a shared responsibility, it takes more than just police,” the department said in a social media post.

    Details of the teen's current charges were not immediately available.
