BUSINESS. YESTERDAY. NOW. Good morning everyone. IT'S 430 ON TUESDAY MORNING. I'M MATT BARCARO, I'M CAITLIN SMITH AND WE'RE BEING ACCOMMODATE BY CHIEF METEOROLOGIST CHRISTINE FERREIRA BECAUSE IT'S THE FIRST DAY OF OCTOBER. I mean, she's always with us, but considering it's the first day of October, we already feel like the temperatures are dropping. How are things going today, CHRISTINE? IN ORDER. GOOD MORNING. TODAY IT IS STILL LIKE YESTERDAY AND THE DAY BEFORE. AND THE DAY BEFORE. RIGHT. WE NOW HAVE OUR STORM TEAM ON THE LIVE RADAR NETWORK. You can see it's wet across Pennsylvania this morning. And to our south, while the remains of Helene slowly move east. So we'll still see the same thing this morning, with areas of rain and drizzle. TEMPERATURES ARE ALWAYS IN THE LOW 60's. FOG IS NOT A BIG PROBLEM. That's good news. AND OUR HEIGHT TODAY. THEY WILL REACH THE MID 60'S, SO AGAIN NOT A MAJOR AREA, WITH A FEW ON AND OFF SHOWERS. SOME AREAS OF LIGHT RAIN. Overall, another wet day. IT SHOULD DRY OUT A BIT TOMORROW. The cold front begins early Thursday morning and we should see brighter skies by the end of the week. MORE DETAILS TO COME IN MY TEN DAYS. IN ORDER. Tonight, vice presidential candidates JD Vance and Tim Walz will face off in their first and only debate. NEWS EIGHT'S KALYN NORWOOD IS AT THIS DEBATE LOCATION IN NEW YORK CITY. Journalists from all over the world come here to report on it. YOU CAN SEE SOME SET UP OUTSIDE. However, here on the left you will see the actual duel between the candidates. You're right in one of the CBS studios here. This is a big night for two candidates who are largely unknown on the national stage. A FEW MONTHS AGO. As for the debate itself, the difference from presidential debates is that the microphones are not muted. WHAT IS THE SAME IS THAT THERE IS NO STUDY AUDIENCE AND THE CANDIDATES SPEAK ABOUT 90 MINUTES. Now some analysts are telling us that this debate could make a difference in what is expected to be a close race. Nobody votes for vice president. YOU VOTE FOR PRESIDENT. That doesn't mean the vice presidential debates don't matter. It's not the people who will choose between JD Vance and Tim Walz, but it will be on the front page of every newspaper. WHAT THEY SAY. It's another chance for both sides to highlight each other's strengths and weaknesses. The debate is scheduled to begin at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. REPORTING FROM NEW YORK CITY. That means at least 36 ports from Maine to Texas are now closed. AND THE Stakes are VERY HIGH. THE POTENTIAL FOR DISRUPTION IS SIGNIFICANT. WE HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED AN EVENT LIKE THIS IN OUR PORTS SINCE 1977 AND IT LAST 12 DAYS. We are deeply concerned about the impact a strike could have on our supply chains, particularly when it comes to critical goods such as medical supplies and others. THE FOUR COMPONENTS ARE PREVENTION, POLICE PRACTICES, PROSECUTOR TOOLS AND PUNISHMENT. The legislative package would increase the number of crime-fighting programs that control reward funding. THAT'S REALLY WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO, IS TO BRING IT LOCAL. I believe that working with local law enforcement always leads to a better outcome in my opinion.
