Drunk driver arrested for hit-and-run, killing woman sleeping on sidewalk in Third Ward

THIRD WAY – A man has been arrested and charged in a fatal crash that killed a 72-year-old woman in the Third Ward. The driver, now identified as 49-year-old Alexandre Segal, was charged with manslaughter under the influence of alcohol.

According to Houston police, the accident occurred around 2:20 a.m. Saturday in the 2300 block of Scott Street near I-45. According to investigators, Segal was driving a red Toyota Tundra pickup truck south on Scott Street when he struck a red Toyota Corolla from behind.

Police said the impact of the initial crash caused Segal's truck to hit the pavement and hit a woman who was believed to be sleeping. The woman, identified as Ethel Evans, 72, died at the scene. No one else was injured.

Investigators said Segal showed signs of intoxication and was booked into the Harris County Jail. He now faces a charge of involuntary manslaughter under the influence of alcohol and was given a $100,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court again on October 30.
